The Costco Kirkland Signature Shampoo Shampoo has served me well for the last 6 months while keeping my hair firm and preserving its moisture!

PROS

  • Good for long-term use
  • Preserves moisture and firmness
  • Good value

CONS

  • Relatively runny
  • Bulky bottle
  • Too many ingredients?

I have always been looking for a shampoo that is affordable and of good quality. I don’t like the drugstore brands such as Dove, as they dry my hair out or make it appear thin. My wife referred me to Salon shampoo brands such as Crew, which preserved firmness, made it brittle and hard in the long run. I have been experimenting with shampoos for about 30 years. Important to note that I never use conditioners.

In the past, I had relied on brands from my native Germany, which I carried in bulk across the Atlantic on the plane . This has changed since we now only travel carry-on. German brands such as Guhl or Alpine are much better than local brands in my opinion, and also much less toxic.

I had ignored Costco’s Kirkland Signature shampoo for the longest time, probably because the bottle is so big – and my wife had no interest in it. Once on sale, I tried it out. It comes in a set of two 1l bottles. Costco claims it contains “100% natural extracts and gentle cleansers”.

Ingredients: aqua/water/eau, sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate, cocamidopropyl betaine, cocamide mea, sodium chloride, glycerin, amodimethicone, cetrimonium chloride, trideceth-12, glycol stearate, polyquaternium-55, argania spinosa kernel oil, aloe barbadensis leaf juice*, polyquaternium- 10, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, parfum (fragrance), methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, magnesium nitrate, magnesium chloride, citric acid, sodium pca, sodium lactate, arginine, aspartic acid, pca, glycine, alanine, serine, valine, proline, threonine, isoleucine, histidine,

Looks like the whole periodical table. Not sure this is natural. Good that cancer does not run in my family.

After 6 months of constant use, the first bottle is still half full. My hair is firmer than with Dove, has not dried out as with Crew, and has a vital and well-nourished appearance. I am quite happy with it for long-term use.

There are also downsides of the Kirkland Signature Shampoo: it is of rather low viscosity (“thin”), you need a lot of it compared to the more expensive German shampoos. And because of this, it is runny and can get into one’s eyes easily. But the price is right, hence I will stick to it. For me, it is a good choice overall.

Until next time…keep on shampooing!
