I am currently using a Gustard X26 Pro DAC which is fantastic and the first DAC I truly fell in love with. Having said that, I have recently found that upsampling via Roon, which allows one to choose a precise/slow and lineal/min. phase filter, takes the experience to another level. There’s always the risk of autosuggestion, but I feel quite confident in saying that (when upsampling) the Slow Min. Phase filter sounds the most natural to my ears. Individual notes appear more natural and on certain tracks, like Fila Brazillia’s “The Sheriff” the thump of the kick sounds cleaner, without any accompanying “boxiness”. I have switched between filters whilst listening and got the same result each time (I really focused on that particular sound and was using a TOTL pair of headphones), so I think it’s more than placebo.
Do you have any experience with even more advanced filters, such as the ones offered in the HQPlayer software? I’m wondering if any of them get close to having your cake and eating it too (in terms of preserving the frequency domain, filtering out all ultrasonic nastiness but without introducing pre-/post-ringing in the process)?
